Though the base has a Norfolk address, it is located more in Virginia Beach. These cities are the top two most populated in the state and are a part of the area known as Hampton Roads. Other cities in Hampton Roads include Portsmouth, Chesapeake, Hampton, and Newport News. This is a heavily populated area and is home to many military installations; housing is not scarce here and the locals are used to the military lifestyle. A typical commute is about 20 minutes. However, traffic can be brutal in these parts, especially at rush hours. This coastal area of southern Virginia is just 1.5 hours southeast of Richmond, the capital city. Washington D.C. is a 3.5 hour drive north of base. Chesapeake and Portsmouth are also close by.
